‘A THOUSAND’ CHOICES FOR SHANGHAI’S NIGHTLIFE (BARS) | SHANGHAI

(Photo: Pocho's classic Mojito)

The nightlife in Shanghai is not less colorful than in Hong Kong, but just scattered in the city and you maybe need someone’s suggestion. In general, there are some famous blocks that you could enjoy the nights; the Bund, Huai Hai Road (close to People Square side), Xin Tian Di, French Concession Area, Tian Zi Fang, Jing An area. In the past 3 weeks, I went to some places those I have never been to, and finally get a list to share.

Yong Kang Lu

Crazy time: 4pm till 10pm, Friday to Sunday

This is a magic of a 100 meter street surrounded by the old Shanghainese buildings. I have been their twice on Thursday and Saturday; and the street tells me even in the afternoon, it’s crazy for the expat-crowds, floating laugh, colorful French-cute motors, and those ‘evil’ yellow liquid (beer :P). People are chatting in an extreme relax and happy mode. And probably the most nervous person in this street is those traffic-control workers, who is always reminding people for cars or motors going through.

In this street, you always can find your stop, coz each bar has its own featured imported brands of beer, and some bars offers different types of foods, not only fries but Japanese foods, Kebab (OH MY KEBAB!), Mini-burger, and even simple pasta. The alcohol on Yong Kang Lu, is almost on a contingent price line, 500ml draught beer around 45-60RMB, house spirits about 35RMB, craft beer 30-40RMB, and cocktail about 50-70RMB. Most importantly, half price for a large selection in happy hour (different from different bars, but normally from late afternoon till 7/8pm).

Open in April of 2014, this American style pub & restaurant (Box Cat Group) becomes local media's 'baby' in a fast speed! It is inspired from the classic American pub with a huge collection of brews, but it is also innovated with a lot modern design, finally mixed to be a new chic location in Shanghai, attracting crowds now. The servings range from tapas & main course which is in big potion to be share, to crafted beers/special cocktails/in-house spirits; and you are served in the areas ranged from bar, old salon style sofa, casual designed chairs, to standard dining tables/benches. Read more about this restaurant >

This is one of my favorite bar during this trip back to Shanghai. Owned by three tequila lovers, this is one authentic Mexico style bar. Three-bar offers almost any possibility for friend-talk, after-work hours, weekend gathering, special parties, etc. And occasionally on Sundays, my lovely bar owner, Jake, will prepare outdoor BBQ for all! If you want a relax, speak-easy bar with a lot creative and good cocktail, a rich collection of tequila, drought Asahi, and most importantly, an atmosphere of  'all-friend-around', Pocho is highly recommended to you. A cosy and casual Japanese bar, located in the quiet residential blocks. Two Chinese female owners and also bartenders take this bar as the friend-gathering place with all their clients. A rich collection of Sake is offered. Weekend night, it is even crowded to my surprise. The rings were coming in all the time from old clients who was checking whether there is a seat in bar. And remember, it is not allowed to smoke in front of the bartenders, because one of them is a singer :D

Happy Hour. 4pm - 8pm (Daily)

Happy hour lasts 4 hours from 4pm every day, and they offers a not short drink list including draught/craft beers, spirits, selected cocktails, wines, and even soft drinks and juices. 35RMB for whisky, 60RMB for a 500ml Hoegaarden Draught. In weekdays nights, they also have daily special promotion including the popular dishes. Even to have one drink in the big terrace is not a bad idea, but you better book a table for it's really crowded by expats and locals in the nights. Read more about this restaurant >
